Modus and Marshfield Clinic imagine the workplace of tomorrow
This September Modus’ Jason Valdina and Todd Stensberg of Marshfield Clinic presented their vision for the future of work to over 40 corporate leaders at The Conference Board’s Communicating Employee Benefits conference in New York City.
The talk, based on our recent work with Marshfield Clinic, offered participants an inspiring glimpse into the digital workplaces of tomorrow, where employees will use their benefits, build new skills and advance their careers in more dynamic and powerful ways than ever by utilizing the latest in consumer technologies.
The two-day event was attended by executives in communications, HR and benefits from leading organizations including Walgreens, The Walt Disney Company, United Airlines, Monsanto, TD Ameritrade and MetLife.
Marshfield Clinic is the largest private group medical practice in Wisconsin and one of the largest in the United States, with more than 700 physicians representing over 80 different medical specialties, more than 6,500 employees, and 50 locations in northern, central and western Wisconsin. Renzell and Modus cook up the future of restaurant ratings
Restaurant industry start-up Renzell announced today the launch of its groundbreaking ratings app for the fine dining industry: Renzell. Designed and built by Modus, Renzell is the first app to combine diner reviews with big data to produce the most trustworthy view available of America’s fine dining restaurants.
Renzell was founded by serial entrepreneur and venture capitalist Bo Peabody, whose previous media ventures include Tripod.com (acquired by Lycos) and EverydayHealth. He is currently a Venture Partner and Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Greycroft Partners and is a co-owner of Mezze Restaurant Group, which operates restaurants in The Berkshires in Massachusetts.

“Current rating systems offer either the subjective opinions of a few or the screed of thousands,” said Peabody. “Renzell uses a hand-selected group of knowledgeable, anonymous diners along with a comprehensive survey and our proprietary algorithm to create the most accurate ratings available of renowned New York City restaurants.”
After each meal, reviewers fill out a 75-question survey that examines eight criteria ranging from cocktails to design to vibe. The survey is designed to eliminate subjectivity or bias on the part of the reviewer. Renzell then uses this survey information along with hundreds of thousands of data points to produce its unique Renzell Rating.
Initially focused on New York, Renzell has plans to expand to Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and other cities.

Inventing the digital future can take many forms, including inspiring the next generation of software designers and developers.
This April Modus hosted 22 second-graders and teachers from Brooklyn’s P.S. 372 The Children’s School for our first-ever Game Jam event. Our objective: To build a video game in just one hour, and in the process encourage a lasting interest in the STEAM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Mathematics) among this diverse group of seven and eight-year-olds.
Using iPads loaded with specialized software from Pixel Press, a team of Modus engineers guided the students through a series of activities designed to teach them STEAM-focused learning principles of prototyping, design thinking, teamwork, trial and error and user empathy as they designed, played and shared their creations with classmates in a fun, fast-paced environment.
Described by one student as “the best field trip ever,” we hope this event will be a model for future engagement with the software superstars of tomorrow.

The user experience experts at the Nielsen Norman Group have recognized the Architect of the Capitol’s new Modus-designed employee intranet as an example of intranet design best practices in their new 2014 Intranet Information Architecture (IA) Report.

wis.dm named official Webby Award Nominee in social networking category
Modus client wis.dm nominated for best social networking site in the 12th Annual Webby Awards
Modus Associates announced today that Boston-based client wis.dm has been nominated for Best Social Networking site 12th Annual Webby Awards. Hailed as the “Internet’s highest honor” by the New York Times, The Webby Awards is the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet.
“Nominees like wis.dm are setting the standard for innovation and creativity on the Internet,” said David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webby Awards. “It is an incredible achievement to be selected among the best from the nearly 10,000 entries we received this year.”
Fellow nominees this year in the social networking category included Bebo, Facebook and Ning.com.

Modus featured in Nielsen Norman Group’s prestigious Intranet Design Annual for second year in a row
The corporate intranet designed by Modus Associates for Coldwell Banker Real Estate Corporation has been honored by the web usability experts at the Nielsen Norman Group in its Intranet Design Annual 2008: The Year’s 10 Best Intranets. After reviewing over 500 intranets around the world in its annual design contest, the Nielsen Norman Group ranked the 10 best based on functionality, usability and world-class design. Other honorees this year included Bank of America, Barnes & Noble, Bankinter S.A. (Spain), British Airways, Campbell Soup Company, IKEA North America and SAP. Modus was also honored in last year’s Intranet Design Annual for its work on Comcast Corporation’s national marketing extranet.
